How Do I Have A Relationship With God?
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.”
Matthew 5:14
As Christians, our citizenship is in heaven. However, here on earth, we are a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden! We represent the light of God’s house (His church) and He loves His church. We are to keep the fire of hunger and worship burning in God’s city (His church). If His church is strong, prosperity will come.
1. Perseverance
“I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false. You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first. Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.“
Revelation 2:2-5
When we begin serving the Lord we will take on haters. People will not like us because of Him and especially when He begins to bless us. So, if you can’t handle haters then don’t ask God to bless you. People will love us when we are down because they can control us. It is just the way of human nature.
We should never allow the cares of this world, the desire for other things, or the deception of riches choke out our first love. God wants to bless and prosper us, He does; just as long as we do not replace Him or forfeit today’s happiness expecting greater days tomorrow! There are greater days tomorrow, but we don’t wait on greater days tomorrow to be satisfied today. This is the day the Lord has made and we will rejoice and be glad today. This is a very powerful Biblical concept we must embrace.
2. Keep God Number One
“Observe the commands of the Lord your God, walking in obedience to him and revering him. For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land—a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills; a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey; a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills. When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you. Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. ng dead.“
Deuteronomy 8:6-11
There is absolutely nothing wrong with nice things; however, nice things should NEVER replace God. For that matter, NOTHING or NOBODY should replace our love for God. God’s blessings are our portion, this is a Biblical fact. But He warns us, once we receive His blessings, we do not forget Him. God is and will forever be number one in our heart and we must maintain the fire of hunger for Him. This is an everlasting position–final! This is the foundation in our relationship with God Almighty.
“But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul.”
Deuteronomy 4:29
This scripture refers to when the Israelites walked away from God. When we lose our position of keeping God number one, all we have to do is diligently seek Him with ALL our heart and ALL our soul and we will find Him. This is a recalibration, realignment, an adjustment we should embrace with no condemnation. Life happens but we must be diligent to keep God first!
3. Protecting Our Hunger For God
“You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.”
Psalm 63:1
David is saying here there is a longing, a craving in his soul for the presence of God. We were once all in a land dry and thirsty searching for answers, searching for that water in all kinds of other places. Like the Bible story of the woman at the well searching for water in the five husbands. None of them could give her what Jesus gave her, at that well. It is only in the presence of God our thirst for life will be satisfied. It is in His presence that changes our life so we must fight to seek Him, no matter what.
4. God’s Glorious Mercy
“Seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, and He will have mercy on him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.”
Isaiah 55:6-7
You may be walking down a wicked path and far from God today. You can turn to God and He will quickly forgive you and He will quickly turn your wicked path around. God truly knows who you are and His mercy and grace will change you forever. He has good plans for you but the key is you must seek Him with all your heart and all your soul. This is how to have a relationship with God.
Final Thoughts
I am going to be happy today on my journey into my tomorrow.
It is only in the presence of God where the human soul will be satisfied.
God’s presence is the only thing that will change our life!
