Going Forward In Forgiveness
Although we’ve been redeemed by the blood of Jesus, we still live in a world where our flesh tries to pull us backward. But the good news is this: God never calls us backward—He always calls us forward. Even when we fall short, we don’t stay there. We rise again, we receive grace again, and we move forward again.
Forgiveness isn’t just about the past—it’s about progress. It’s about refusing to let yesterday define the victory God has for you today.
1. Moving Forward Despite Pressure
The enemy looks for ways to slow us down, but he cannot stop a believer who knows how to get back up. Yes, he knows how the flesh reacts. Yes, he tries to push old buttons. But he has no authority to keep us bound.
Because of Jesus, you have the power to rise above every pressure. You are not defined by the weaknesses the enemy targets—you are defined by the Spirit of God living inside you and what He says in His Word about you.
When pressure comes, your response is not retreat but forward motion—stepping into grace, strength, and forgiveness.
2. Wisdom That Helps Us Move Forward
We grow in wisdom as we walk with Jesus, and growing means learning—even from mistakes. Like a child learning to walk, we may fall, but every time we get back up, we grow stronger.
Scripture reminds us:
“Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead…”
Philippians 3:13–14
Paul didn’t say “I forgot.”
He said “I am forgetting.”
It’s a lifestyle—a daily decision to leave yesterday behind and press toward what God has prepared ahead.
Forgiveness empowers forward progress. Condemnation tries to freeze you in place.
Every time you choose to rise, learn, and keep going, you defeat the enemy’s strategy and grow in the wisdom that conquers.
3. Forgiveness Empowers Freedom
Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 3:13-14
Paul is saying here as a believer, a man of God, he is still making mistakes. So, instead of using the word “forget” he used the word “forgetting” which implies that he will continue to leave his mistakes behind him as he moves forward on his faith journey. The enemy works hard to get us stuck in guilt, shame, or replaying old failures. But God’s grace works harder. Forgiveness doesn’t excuse the mistake—it breaks its power over your life.
Walking forward in forgiveness means you refuse to live parked in regret. You keep moving, keep growing, and keep becoming more like Jesus. He is your example, your strength, and the One who leads you into freedom—not perfection, but continual progress.
4. Confessing Keeps You Moving Forward
Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.” And you forgave the guilt of my sin.
Psalm 32:5
The automatic response of sin is to hide and then blame, just like what happened when the first sin was committed in the Garden of Eden. David didn’t hide, run, or blame. He brought his heart to God, received forgiveness, and walked forward again. The pattern of Scripture is clear: when we confess, God forgives. Confession is not about shame—it is about restoration. It is how we stay in fellowship with God and keep moving forward in His grace.
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:9
God does not shame His children. He restores them. He does not push us away. He welcomes us closer. Instead of hiding, blaming, or withdrawing like Adam did, we bring our hearts honestly before the Lord. And every time we do, He forgives, He cleanses, and He strengthens us to rise and keep walking forward.
Confession isn’t going backward—it’s how we keep advancing. When we acknowledge our sin, we break its power, receive God’s mercy, and step forward in the freedom Jesus purchased for us. As we keep confessing and keep moving, we keep maturing in His ways and walking in the power of His forgiveness.
FINAL THOUGHTS
God invites us to live free from the weight of yesterday. His grace empowers us to rise, learn, and keep moving forward.
The enemy pushes toward condemnation, but God leads us toward restoration. Every time we confess, He forgives. Every time we turn to Him, He lifts us.
Forgiveness is not about looking back — it’s about stepping ahead with a clean heart, a renewed mind, and the confidence that His mercy is new every morning.
In Christ, we don’t stay down. We get up, we grow, and we go forward.
