How Do I Love God?
“Solomon showed his love for the Lord by walking according to the instructions given him by his father David, except that he offered sacrifices and burned incense on the high places.”
1 Kings 3:3
We begin loving God because He first loved us and rescued us from a life of sin, and through our salvation He gives us eternal life! When God finds us, He doesn’t look at our mess, He sees us restored and living a life with purpose, a purpose He saw in us before we were formed in our mother’s womb.
1. Perfect Love
“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. We love because He first loved us.”
1 John 4:18-9
When the revelation of God’s love for us is not developed in our life, fear will set in. We must remember He has our future in the palm of His hand. This is where our faith journey begins, trusting in God as we develop in His love. Trusting in His perfect love removes anxiety, removes the depression, and the fear of tomorrow. Worry is actually sin because it is an indicator that we are not trusting in His plan and protection over our life. Through this faith journey, our focus must always be we are more than conquerors through Him who loves us!
2. Whole Heart Love
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.”
Deuteronomy 6:5
The actual definition of love is to have affection for someone, to like someone, or to be a friend. We all have someone we like to spend time with. This person could be our spouse, our children, a best friend; however, we all have certain people we like spending time with. Well, God wants us to love Him with our whole heart and all of our affection. He wants us to want to spend time with Him because He loves spending time with us. This is His perfect love for us. God wants us to love Him with our inner man, with our will, with our decision making, and with our inward vows. We must follow after Him and His plans with our whole heart. Follow Him into your eternity–all the days of your life. This is perfect love!
3. A Love Offering
“While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.”
Matthew 14:3
This woman had been forgiven of much and her love offering to Jesus was a symbol of her deep love for Him and the forgiveness of her sins. When we get the revelation of God’s perfect love for us, we will give Him our all, like a love offering! This perfume in those days was equivalent to a year’s worth of work wages.
He who has been forgiven of much will love much. When we realize how we were filthy as rags–living sinful lives–when we came to the altar of salvation, we can love Him much.
4. With All Our Soul, We Love Him
Loving Him with all our soul means loving Him with our life, desires, passions, appetites, emotions, etc. Although our desires and our passions can bring us much success and motivate us to do great things in life, we must always remember to never put our successes before God.
