How to Forget the Past and Let Go

How to Forget the Past and Let Go

Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it.  But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 3:13-14

This scripture is a growth mindset to target for this New Year! We let go of the past so we can move forward into this New Year. We all have an opportunity to park in the pain of our past; however, God’s word is teaching us here, to win the prize of the future God has planned for us, we get up and move forward without carrying the baggage of our past. Apostle Paul knew this well as he had persecution in his life that went after him with a vengeance determined to destroy him and the message he was proclaiming.

1. Let Go of Past Hurts

Forgetting, forgiving, and moving forward must be intentional. To walk in God’s promises this year, we cannot hold on to past sins, mistakes, or pains. God gives us the grace to release what slows us down and guides us toward the desires He has placed in our hearts. Each day, choose to surrender one past hurt or failure to Him in prayer and refuse to dwell on it.

2. Build Endurance in Your Faith

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.

Hebrews 12:1

Letting go and moving forward will produce optimum endurance for the race God has set before us. We are letting go of past pain, mistakes, and sins in our life that produces the opposite of optimum endurance. In fact, these things we hold onto will stunt our spiritual growth and slow us down, maybe even derail us from God’s plans.  We trust in God’s precepts and His process and He will guide us to our promised land. When you feel weighed down, ask the Holy Spirit to strip away that burden so you can continue running the race with confidence.

3. Identify and Release Sin

And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.

Ephesians 4:30-32

Sometimes we can mask our sin as just struggles in life.  But truth must be told: some struggles are rooted in unconfessed sin that we need to get rid of and remove from our lives. Take time to examine your heart and life, acknowledging anything that hinders your walk with God. Confess it, release it, and allow His Spirit to transform you. Breaking these cycles opens the way for a lifestyle of freedom, blessing, and spiritual growth.

4. Receive God’s Grace and Move Forward

So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

Hebrews 4:16

Come boldly to God’s throne and receive His mercy and grace. His forgiveness empowers us to leave the past behind and move forward. Embrace His grace daily, allowing it to guide your steps, strengthen your faith, and flow through every area of your life as you step confidently into your promised land.

FINAL THOUGHTS

To step into this New Year with faith, we must let go of past hurts, build endurance in our walk with God, and identify and release sin.

When we receive His grace and move forward, we make room for His blessings, His strength, and His promises to flow freely in our lives.

Stand firm, trust His Word, and press toward the prize God has prepared for you in 2026.
