What Is A Soul Worth?
“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”
Mark 1:17
What does it mean to win a soul? Such a powerful and relevant question to ask a follower of Jesus Christ. We are not born soul winners even though we have soul winning in us. We have to be developed, built up, and equipped to become a soul winner.
1. Fisherman Techniques
Let us consider the techniques of a fisherman with regard to soul winning. The sport of fishing has many things to consider. There are different bodies of water: a river or a stream, a lake, the ocean. The seasons of the year: winter, spring, summer, or fall which determines the climate. Therefore, the climate will affect the choice of fishing lure options. Even the location has to be considered. To become a good fisherman you have to learn the sport and all of its techniques, which are many. So, to become a soul winner we have to be developed, and we have to be trained.
2. A Wise Heart
The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and the one who is wise saves lives.
Proverbs 11:30
When we first surrender our lives to Jesus, our hearts are filled with fresh fire and excitement. We can’t help but tell others about Him — the One who opened our eyes and set us free. That passion to see others saved and walking in truth is one of the first signs of a transformed heart. But as time goes on, it’s easy for that initial fire to fade.
Sometimes, we can become so focused on our own spiritual growth, our routines, or our ministry responsibilities that we forget the heart of the gospel — souls. A wise heart doesn’t just seek God for itself; it seeks to bring others to Him. Wisdom is knowing that our faith is not only personal but also missional.
The one who wins souls is wise because they see what truly matters — eternity. Each person we encounter carries an eternal destiny. When we share Jesus, we’re not just speaking words; we’re releasing people from captivity, offering them freedom from sin, and rescuing them from eternal separation from God.
We are God’s agents on earth, sent to bring heaven’s hope into every heart. A wise heart keeps that mission alive — to love, to reach, and to save.
3. No Fear
Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.”
Luke 5:10
Fear has no place in the life of a believer. When the love of God abides in us, His perfect love drives out all fear. The moment Jesus called Simon Peter to follow Him, He immediately addressed fear — because fear is one of the greatest barriers to faith and obedience. When God calls us to reach souls, He also empowers us with courage to do it.
If God is for us, who can be against us? We have no reason to fear rejection, opposition, or failure. The love of God within us gives us the confidence to step out boldly and speak the truth in love. We don’t fear the future, because our future is secure in Him. We don’t fear people’s opinions, because we live for the approval of God.
We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.
1 John 5:19
Yes, the world around us is under spiritual darkness, and many souls are held captive by it. But we carry the light — the power and authority of Jesus Christ — to set them free. When we share the gospel, we are confronting darkness with divine power. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives in us and speaks through us.
We are not just called to fish for souls — we are called to do it fearlessly. Every time we step out in faith, we declare that love is stronger than fear, and light is greater than darkness.
4. Arise From Darkness
For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
Colossians 1:13-14
Everywhere we look, darkness tries to influence and shape the world around us. There are spiritual strongholds over cities, nations, and cultures — yet no matter how dark it gets, the light of God always shines brighter. We are not called to fear the darkness; we are called to rise above it. God has already rescued us from its grip and transferred us into His glorious Kingdom.
We are living in a generation that desperately needs the light of Jesus. As culture drifts further from God’s truth, we must shine even brighter. The same power that pulled us out of sin, shame, and spiritual blindness now equips us to pull others out. We were once captives, but now we are carriers of freedom — ambassadors of Christ sent to reflect His love, goodness, and grace in a dark world.
Soul winning isn’t just a calling; it’s our commission. Every time we share the gospel, every time we love the unlovable or pray for the hurting, we are snatching souls from darkness and bringing them into the light of God’s Kingdom. This is what it means to arise — to take our place as light bearers, fully awake, fully alive, and fully devoted to the mission of Jesus Christ.
FINAL THOUGHTS
We are not born soul winners even though we have soul winning in us. We have to be developed, built up, and equipped to become a soul winner.
We have to keep our heart strong for the souls of the lost. We are agents for God’s kingdom and their eternity!
God has rescued us out of darkness and we must arise and rescue the lost souls that are being held captive just as we were.
